What does Plan International do? Plan International was founded almost 80 years ago with a mission to promote and protect the rights of children and specifically equality for girls. Today, Plan International is a global organisation that works in 51 low-income countries to promote children’s rights and lift millions of children out of poverty. The organisation’s programmes cover 8 key impact areas: education; water and sanitation; sexual and reproductive health; child participation; early childhood care and development; child protection; economic security and disaster risk management.
What is the Because I Am a Girl campaign? “Because I am a Girl” is Plan International’s global initiative to transform power relations so that girls everywhere can learn, lead, decide and thrive. The focus of the campaign is on girls, because a girl in the developing world faces overwhelming odds from the day she is born. To do this, Plan identifies the key barriers to girls’ empowerment – social neglect, little or no education, child marriage, forced labour, domestic and sexual violence, early pregnancy and more – and they break them.
How is Mark involved? In May of this year, I will be participating in a traverse across the Annapurna mountain range in Nepal. This trek will involve visiting many of the local communities along the way and an ascent of Poon Hill, at a peak elevation of 3,210 metres. I will also witness first hand some of the programmes being run by Plan International in Nepal and see for myself the excellent work that they carry out. I hope to raise 4,000 Euro in support of this very worthy cause.
How can you help? Please feel free to donate any amount towards Plan’s work. All your contributions will go directly to community projects in Nepal, and will not subsidise in any way the cost of my trip.
Any questions? Feel free to get in touch with me by posting a message below. I’d be more than happy to tell you more about my expedition and Plan International’s inspirational work.

During the 10 day trip, we will journey through remote mountain villages and be fully immersed in local culture. We will trek through the village of Ghandruk, home to the Gurung people, and make our way through Rhododendron and Oak Forests and the village of Deurali. I am especially looking forward to visiting the construction sites of school dwellings that have had to be rebuilt after the devastating earthquakes that struck Nepal in April and May 2015. Plan International, Lisya, and myself are committed to driving the global movement ‘Because I am a Girl’ that transforms power relations so girls everywhere can learn, lead, decide and thrive. Every girl has the right to an education, but over 60 million girls are missing from primary and secondary school education around the world today.

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page!
Plan International is a worldwide charity dedicated to alleviating poverty and injustice for children in over 70 developing countries. It is particularly focused on the plight of girls who are more disadvantaged in many societies – where lack of education, early marriage, pre-teen childbirth, abuse and violence are among the ‘norms’ for millions in their daily lives.
Through the many education, support and development programmes undertaken by Plan International, children are being empowered to rise above deprivation and injustice and create better lives for themselves and, ultimately, their communities.
In April, in support of the wonderful work of Plan International, I will take up a challenge to cycle across the mountainous Ha Giang province of North Vietnam in 5 days, covering up to 65 km of mountain climbs daily. Along the way I will visit and stay in the mountain communities and experience at first hand the support that Plan International programmes provide.
Needless to say I would love your support for this charity challenge!
I know that you have many calls on your generosity in different ways and so anything that you can contribute would be really appreciated and will go directly to the charity and to the work that they do.
Thanks again for your time!

As a global organisation working in 51 developing countries, Plan International Ireland promotes children’s rights, ending injustices and lifting millions of children out of poverty. Myself and 15 others will be flying to Hanoi, Vietnam on 12th April 2017, cycling an average of 50km daily. We will head on a bus to Ha Giang province, visiting some ethnic villages through Phu Tho, Tuyen Quang. Arriving at Ha Giang by 16.00 to try out our bikes – I hope mine is an appropriate size as I am 5 ft 8 and considerably heavier than your average Vietnamese – fingers crossed!! Saturday is our first full day – 25km through landscape of terraced rice paddy fields, relatively flat through Quan Ba. The next 25km up winding roads into vast limestone mountain range, climing 800m towards the mountain road pass “Heaven Gate 1” then a lovely 15km downhill into Quan Ba, where we stay overnight. The next few days will be a challenging mix of up and downhill at an altitude over 1,000m. Day 6 will be our first opportunity to witness first hand, the work of Plan International and how the fundraising efforts help, visiting a programme where we get to meet the children, families, teachers and communities that are benefitting from Plan International’s community based Bilingual Education for Ethnic Minority children in the region. Today’s cycle is a short ride, the climb much harder but more spectacular. Day 7 we will be cycling one of the most scenic; 10km of Northern Vietnam with huge gorges leading straight into the wild frontier land and Yunnan Province of China. After lunch, we will be visiting our second Plan International programme. Day 8 will be our final day of cycling through a stunningly remote mountain road en route to Bao Lac through beautiful villages. After 5km uphill cycle we will make a (well earned) 20km descent before following a fairly flat 10km – more than likely exhausted by then!! The surrounding landscape with surreal vista of peaks, troughs, towers and caves, passing people from local minority communities along the way dressed in their vibrant tribal costumes. Upon arrival in Bao Lac, we will check into local guesthouse for our overnight. Day 9 – full day transfer back to Hanoi with legs like rocks probably, having our final celebratory meal together with time to explore Vietnam’s vibrant capital. Day 10 – transfer back to the airport for flight back to Dublin. As I use my bike every day around Wexford Town, I look forward to improving my fitness as I work towards a cause I’m passionate about. Thank you in advance for your support! Regards, Kathy

Plan International is a leading children’s rights organisation working in 71 countries around the world, helping poor and marginalised children realise their full potential. The Cycle for Girls is a challenging 250km cycle across Vietnam which aims to raise vital funds for girls education projects. 62 million girls are not in school today, simply because they are girls. But with your help we can change this, and ensure girls in Vietnam get the education, skills and support they need to transform their lives and the world around them. Being a girl in the developing world is tough. It means you are more likely to be married off early, find yourself having a child while still a child yourself, drop out of school, suffer from violence and abuse, be the last to be fed, and ultimately be the last to be heard. Plan International’s 80 years of experience has proven to us that supporting children and girls is the best investment we can make in the world today. If we invest smartly in them, they can decide the future they want for themselves and for their children. They can educate themselves and those around them. They can invest and save and reinvest. Ultimately, they can make the world, OUR world, better. I am paying for the costs of the campaign (€1500)myself so I need some support in achieving my fundraising goal. Anything that you can donate would be greatly appreciated : ) I hope that you can support me on this very worthwhile cause to make their futures and world a brighter place. We want a future where all girls are educated and empowered to change the world! When you educate and empower girls, the whole world benefits.
Girls who are healthy, educated and earning, lift themselves and their communities out of poverty. A girl in the developing world faces overwhelming odds from the day she’s born. Every day girls are denied their basic human rights. They often can’t go to school, earn a living and are at greater risk of violence in their communities. Plan International are working to reverse those odds with their work and in particular their Because I am a Girl campaign.
We are taking on the Cycle for Girls Vietnam challenge to raise much needed funds to support this initiative! We will be travelling to Vietnam in April 2017 to take part in a Cycle trip of 250km over the course of 5 days. The journey will take us through the North-Western region of Vietnam, where we will traverse the Ha Giang province by bike, working our way through remote mountain villages and immersing ourselves in the local H’mong culture! We will visit Plan International education and girls’ rights projects along the way, to see first hand how our fundraising efforts are helping more girls get educated and reach their full potential.
This is going to be an educational, fascinating and challenging physical experience (especially for Emma!) but we are motivated and ready! We would love if you could support us so we can support them!
We are covering our own costs for the trip (€3000). Anything that you can contribute, no matter how small, would be greatly appreciated and all donations received will go directly to this fantastic charity.
Thanks! Emma & Stéphane

Orlaith and I will be travelling to Nepal next Spring 2017, to take on both a personal and physical challenge, as we trek to the summit of Poon Hill. Along with the tough descents and ascents culminating in a challenging 10,500 ft. climb to the Poon Hill summit, we will also travel to rural communities to see first hand how money raised will be used to deliver programmes and meet the people that are benefiting from the work of Plan International.
The duration of our trip will last 10 days and in that time we will journey through remote mountain villages and immerse ourselves in the local culture. We will trek through the village of Ghandruk, home to the Gurung people, and make our way through Rhododendron and Oak Forests and the village of Deurali. During our time, we will be visiting the construction sites of school dwellings that have had to be rebuilt after the devastating earthquakes that struck Nepal in April and May 2015.
Plan International, Orlaith, and myself are committed to driving the global movement ‘Because I am a Girl’ that transforms power relations so girls everywhere can learn, lead, decide and thrive. We will return home to Ireland on May 7, 2017 with the hope and desire to share our experience and inspire others to support this worthy cause. Thank you.

I have supported Plan International for the last 4 years, and have always been impressed with their work. To help raise awareness of the impact they have on children and communities all over the world, and girls in particular, I will be travelling to Nepal in April 2017, to complete a challenging 4 day hike to the Poon Hill summit at 3,210m in the Himalayan region. I will also visit some of the programmes that Plan International are running in Nepal. I hope to raise 5,000 Euro for this wonderful charity.

Plan International Ireland is a great charity supporting children around the world and providing opportunities in their lives. Plan believes all children have the right to food, clean water, health, education and respect. So do I.
Plan works to meet these basic needs of children as well as addressing the causes and consequences of poverty at all levels. Plan International’s commitment to each community means that the health, sanitation and education programmes we establish are long-term and sustainable.
